Kansas is fortunate to experience all four seasons of nature. Occasionally, our location also places us in the path of severe weather. The following tips are designed to help you become more familiar with common weather terminology.
Tornado Watch – Issued when severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. It does not mean that they will occur. It only means they are possible.
Tornado Warning – Issued when a tornado is imminent. When a tornado warning is issued, seek safe shelter immediately.
What to do in a Tornado Warning – If you are in a house, avoid windows. Go to the basement. If no basement is available, go to the lowest floor, small center room, under a stairwell or in an interior hallway with no windows. Cars and other vehicles are not safe in a tornado. Seek indoor shelter if time allows. (Additional tips are available from the Storm Prediction Center)
